So Long...

The last post was my 100th post on this blog. And this will be my last. For the two people and a few dogs and cats that read this I'm moving to greener pastures, called WordPress. To be short nicer looking blogs, better interface and other nerdy stuff like that. So thanks for reading this one, but please make sure to read the new one, I hope to pour more effort into the new one, showing more pictures, writing more posts, as opposed to just some snaps a little text. Time for a fresh new start.

Ohio University's own hip hop star came back to Athens for a show at 19 South this Friday. As much I don't listen to his music, and have never been to this bar (I would say it is slightly notorious) the show was mostly enjoyable. After entering the door, it seemed like this would be something difficult to shoot. The size and density of the crowd was overwhelming to say the least. At times like this I find it almost best to completely tune everything out and realize you are there to make a picture, you need to do what you're there to do, don't let the sweaty drunken masses get in the way of that. Despite a lens that wouldn't stop fogging up I managed to get some alright shots and call it a night.

Jeez what a let down.

At around 7 last night there was a call about a hostage situation in a Nashua neighborhood. What had happened was a murder fugitive from Florida had made his way up north and was squatting at someone's house (relation wasn't clear). When I arrived that situation was pretty much diffused. The SWAT team had thrown tear gas into the house and were able to arrest him. What I ended up seeing was people not being allowed back into their houses. They hadn't been able to go back into their houses (some still had their stove's on) for four hours. What I happened to come upon was a bunch of cold people patiently waiting. Not as juicy a story as I had thought.

High on a combination of the heady tropical climate, local rum, grade A cocaine and in the arms of nubile 22-year-old, fantasy and reality became blurred. It felt like I was living in a Quentin Tarantino movie."

Another one from the river today. This was my first spot news assignment in awhile. For the last few months, when I'm called to a breaking news event its usually a car accident or fire in the middle of the night. This time I spent two hours in the middle of the day watching the entire story unfold. For an hour...nothing. Not a word from the EMS, police, or firefighters. It was a good deal of waiting from something to happen. The woman in this shot kind of just showed up. No real explanation. There were some others like her as well. One guy even owns a police scanner and just goes when he hears something interesting. Like some weird blood lust. Do they just want to see a dead body? I was judging then in my head a lot but then I realized I was kind of doing the exact same thing. It's good to keep things in perspective and think about how to separate yourself from the gawking masses.

What could be more boring than a documentary about fonts? If it was about the minutiae that only a type designer could understand, than yes it would be quite boring. But what if it was about the font that is so ubiquitous in our visual culture that some designers consider it the type equivalent to air?

Helvetica, a documentary released by Red Envelope (Netflix's distribution company) focus on the creation, usage, praise and rejection of Helvetica, the ever present san-serif that can be seen in the logos for countless corporations and brands. Watch this movie alone just to get a kick out of the fact that Target, American Airlines, Crate and Barrel, the Gap, the IRS, EPA, the NYC Subway and countless other governments, corporations and designers are using the exact same font.

Why?

Because it works. One of the most interesting things I heard was one designer saying that some fonts only make you feel one way. They are overly designed to communicate only one emotion, but the success of Helvetica is its universal nature and in essence can communicate anything you want to. From clean, comforting design to crushing bureaucracies, it has been used to communicate and helped usher in a new age of modernism and simplicity in design.

One of the most interesting parts was on the rejection of Helvetica. Some dismissed it as simply boring, while Paula Scher saw Helvetica as a supporter of the Vietnam and Iraq war. An image of corporate conformity that strangles creativity.

But then again, the film shows that ironically, corporate conformity is only one of its uses. Its a blank slate that can be shifted and molded to fit whatever message people have. As I find myself more interested in design this was truly an eye opening film. To watch this then go out on the street, it's as if you're looking a the world with a completely different set of eyes.

Mike Kilduff, of Nashua, is a cab driver who frequently works the late shift, picking up many people leaving bars and night clubs. Compared to a normal nine-to-five job, Kilduff loves what he does. On driving a cab, he said that "it's one of the most interesting jobs I've every had...cause it always changes."

I went to cover the open tryouts for the Manchester Wolves arena football team yesterday afternoon. I was expecting some sort of scrappy little tryout, kind of like a grown up Bad News Bears, but it was mostly guys in their mid-late 20s and some pushing their mid thirties. One kid was even my age (20). I was shooting for a multimedia piece that was supposed to run today, but it seems the Telegraph's trusty online staff forgot to put it up.

Been in a bit of a lull here recently, Here's a shot form a practice I shot.

Went skiing yesterday with Yoon and Noah up north. Having not been in a long time (about 6-7 years) it was such a great time. We're going to try and do it somewhat weekly. Knowing how much I would probably fall down (and I did, a bunch) I left my digital camera at home and took my old film body along. I'd like to get that roll developed and scanned as soon a possible, whenever that may be.

Mitt Romney came in second in the New Hampshire Primary tonight. And overall it wasn't too eventful, he's still high on confidence and so are his supporters. I even walked past one person saying "He WILL be the next President of the United States" will so much certainty is was scary.

My day wasn't that busy, but the 15 (or less) I spent shooting his speech was crazy. I think I spend a few hundred frames snapping away like mad. If I covered more of these things I'm sure I would have more control, but I might not see politics like this for years, so I made my time worthwhile and shot as much as I could.

It's been a good few days. I got to cover the beginning of an Obama event today and for fun I photographed the rally outside the New Hampshire Primary Debate this evening where I later lost my keys in the snow (I found them!) Tomorrow it's Hillary and maybe something Monday and Tuesday I'm on Romney detail.

It's crazy up here...cameras and journalists everywhere. Tonight Noah and I got some food after a cold evening's worth of photography and simply watched the debate and laughed at all the madness that we're surrounded by. More pictures to come.

I am back!

I'm now snug and secure in Nashua, New Hampshire interning at the Nashua Telegraph. So far work has been slow, only two assignments, buts once the Iowa Caucus is over, New Hampshire is going to be even more inundated with politicians and the media. I'm excited to be part of such an important and unique election, this is really one of the most diverse and crowded elections (candidate wise) the US has had in decades.

As of right now, there's no clear leader on either side of the aisle so it seems each candidate is really pushing it into overdrive to garner any kind of support they can. I saw a Keith Bedford photo recently of Huckabee doing the whole "I'll wear camo and orange vest and look like a hunter too!" sort of deal. It seemed desperate, but it happens every four years and I can't wait to capture these important (or silly) moments myself. I'll be sure to keep you posted over the next week.

This photo is from a Kucinich house party in Milford, NH. He was speaking, and this family looked quite tired. His campaign is quite inspiring. Very grass roots, diverse in age and unabashedly optimistic. Its a fiercely competitive campaign and New Hampshire is a fiercely independent state. I have a feeling it just might pan out for Mr. Kucinich at the polls on January 8th.

I was sent today to cover an American Legion baseball game that had a team from our area playing the state playoffs. I hadn't covered sports in a long time, let alone one as difficult to shoot as baseball.

It should be said, that I don't love to shoot sports. I've found that people who like to shoot sports just so happen like to watch sports too. And that is totally understandable. To me, football is all spectacle, basketball kinda gives me a headache (it just doesn't stop) and golf is...well its golf.

I've also found that my sentiments are shared within my group of friends. There's no personal interaction with your subjects. You just sit and watch a game, to me (and many others I know) its passive and devoid of what many enter the field of photojournalism to do.

But many people I know who do sports, do them very well. And they do it because they truly love it. And if thats the case, I'm all for it. It just isn't for me.

I've shot a good amount of basketball, and a little football, but very little baseball. Football and basketball have a good linear motion to them, a progression that you can follow and adjust too easily. Baseball, I've found...doesn't. Out of all sports its probably my favorite, and I like to watch it, but its terribly hard to shoot. Not to mention the lens I was using was a borrowed manual focus 300 2.8. Despite the heat, a little sunburn, technical setback and an overall lack of knowledge of how to shoot this game, I walked away with a few frames I liked.

This is after Mike Kerdock (#24) hit a home run and his team met him at home plate to congratulate him. The bat boy wanted a piece of the action too. This was the team I was not sent to cover. They beat the team from my area 18-4. Ouch.

I was sent to cover a rehearsal for a local ballet troupe's production of "Macbeth" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream" The lighting was all florescent, but it was bright where I needed it and overall I'm glad with how the shoot turned out.

After a good while of doing not a whole lot on the work end, I shot an assignment for Education Week, a weekly newspaper read in almost every K-12 school in America. My assignment? Go to one of the most powerful judicial bodies in the world, wait for a verdict in a landmark civil rights case, and make cool pictures. My editor literally told me to just try and make some "funky" images. I couldn't have been happier with this assignment when i was first asked to do it. A few hours in the sun, later I a few images in kinda dig.

Today I spent time with Brian Rigg, a cemetery caretaker, and his girlfriend Cindy. I did a story on them last quarter for my class. It was a transport back a few months and its odd to think the person I was only back in February. I feel that I've grown a considerable amount this year at school. As this year comes to a close its good to reflect and revisit some old chapters.
Cindy has begun to start start a garden, mostly pumpkins and melons. As I was driving up, the irony hit me instantly. Grown next to decay.

90's relic Vanilla Ice was playing a show at Ohio University. With very little advertisements and publicity the free tickets (who's going to pay to see Ice?) sold out within a day and a half. I managed to grab one and decided to take my camera with me.

This was the dumbest show I've ever been too. Ice has managed to completely overhaul his image from early 90's wannabe thug to something that resembles a way out of style Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit. No...thats actually exactly what it was.

He talked about sex, Jager, and weed, all while performing in the new Baker Center. It was great.

There is still a long list of things to be done, but for now I feel as if I've arrived to that lovely end of quarter period.

Looking back a few months (or years) from now, I'm going to probably feel better about the last ten weeks, but as of now, I get the feeling that I haven't really been a student (in the collegiate, book reading, ect sort of way). Instead I've really just been focusing on Picture Story, and have become some sort of image making machine. And I don't mean machine in a good way. I mean a producer, a supplier. In essence, a tool.

But looking back (and I'm sure in time these images might even grow on me) I'm kinda proud with how I've spent my time. I've been thinking more, shooting more, and most importantly, I've been caring more.

This shot is helping me go in the direction I want to take this essay. Find the stereotype of the Male Cattle Rancher and break it. In the foreground this shows what one would expect, in the background is his wife, who in the end is half (or more) of the brains of their operation.

This frame is from a story on a woman who has put her life back together through her faith in God, her husband and her sheer ballsy-ness. Now she serves three things: God, the disabled (where she works) and her mother who has Alzheimer's and Parkinsons. This shot is her walking into where she works, though I find it more graphically pleasing than I do storytelling.
